3rd. May.2009.

FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER.WORLD DAY OF PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS TO PRIESTHOOD AND RELIGIOUS LIFE and Feast also of Sts;Philip and James, Apostles. Collection to support education of our seminarians.Baptisms at 12.15.p.m.

BASICS THAT WILL KEEP US CLOSE TO THE RISEN JESUS AND BE A HELP IN DEVELOPING AN ATMOSPHERE FOR ROUSING UP VOCATIONS. IN THE PARISHES.

We all have responsibility for drawing vocations to priesthood from the community, for they are there, as always. Some very simple ideas and practices can create a very wholesome climate in which such can flourish.Romano Guardini a very profound spiritual writer,in the distant past, yet so practical, as always to be in tune, advised that we use simple signs in our daily Christian lives which can give such energy to a base from which all these gifts, like vocations come. These signs help us to read in outer form, the inner state; to read from the body what is in the soul; to read from the earthly process what is spiritual and hidden; living signs, objects and actions through which we can begin to grasp invisible grace at work in the life of church and liturgy. One of the sacred signs he dwells on as an example of great power is the sign of the Cross.Let us see what he advises.

" you can make the sign of the Cross and make it rightly.Nothing in the way of hasty waving of the hand, from which no one could understand what you are doing- no, a real sign of the Cross; slow, large, from forehead to breast, and from one shoulder to the other.Don`t you feel it takes in the whole of you?Gather up all thoughts and feelings into this sign, as it goes from forehead to breast;pull yourself together, as it goes from shoulder to shoulder. It covers the whole of you, body and soul; it gathers you up, dedicates you, sanctifies you. Why? Because it is the sign of the whole person and the sign of redemption. On the Cross our Lord redeemed all. Through the Cross, He makes holy the whole person, to the very last fibre of his being. That is why we cross ourselves before our prayers, so that the sign may pull us together and set us in order, may fix thoughts, heart and will in God. After prayers, we cross ourselves, so that what God has given us may stay with us.In temptation, that it may strengthen us;in danger that it may protect us; when a blessing is given, that the fullness of life from God, may be taken into our soul, and may consecrate all in it and make it fruitful.Think of this, when you make the sign of the Cross. It is the holiest sign there is.Make it carefully, slowly; make a large one, with recollection. For then it embraces your whole being, body and soul, your thoughts and your will, imagination and feeling, doing and resting; and in it, all will be strengthened, stamped, consecrated in the power of Christ, in the name of the Holy Trinity." Out of such a vibrant sign, life urges on a gift, like vocation to be cultivated, and which can thrive in its nourishing garden.

AT THIS TIME OF YEAR THE WHOLE PARISH COMMUNITY REJOICES WITH THE CHILDREN AND FAMILIES FOR FIRST CONFESSION AND FIRST HOLY COMMUNION.

For some time now, at home and in school and parish, the children in 2nd class have been making ready for these two vital Sacraments in their lives. We rely heavily, in preparation, on the work of the teacher in the classroom, which is deeply appreciated, but must be fully assisted by the complete support and cooperation of the parents and what happens at home spiritually. Our meetings and rehearsals will help to have everything fine tuned for each ceremony and all will work out well.We have very good musical input and the other schoolchildren and teachers and assistants lend a very positive dimension to all the work and making ready for the two great ceremonies and we thank them all.

Stressing that the two great moments are not just each, a one day affair, we insist that there are very important patterns and practices that can be maintained in home, school and parish to ensure, that the children develop a strong religious faith and practice centered on the Mass and these two key Sacraments in their growing lives. And so, at this time, when talking with parents and working together for the good of the child, we must emphasise that taking the child to Mass and Sacraments on a weekly basis is essential; praying with them in the home; working with them on their religion programme at school,as homework comes home for this; showing a deep interest with them in the content of what is being learned, grasped and understood and helping them to see that religion and life combine and are not separate departments at all, in daily living, is a must for parents, who are genuinely interested in the whole development of their child, as a person. We all know that religion is caught not just taught and so, good example of adults, and particularly of parents and grandparents, in living the faith, is the best classroom and learning context for knowing the faith and owning the faith, with regard to how young people merge into belief and practice. The parish community also have a very impacting role in welcoming and sustaining the faith growth of these children. We ask the parish community to show this hospitality by praying for them and their families and warmly greeting and affirming them on the two joyous occasions. The encouragement given by your own faith practice in the parish will bear more fruit than you can imagine. And so, with all of you, we wish the children and their families all God`s graces and blessings for these two memorable days launching them into strong faith life for the years ahead.

19th.April.2009.SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER, LOW SUNDAY, DOMINICA IN ALBIS and Feast also of Sts;Emma, Expedit,Pope Leo 1X and Alphege.Divine Mercy Day.Trocaire Collection Day.

DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY AND TROCAIRE DAY FOR THE POOR OF THE WORLD BASED ON LENTEN FASTING.

It is entirely in order that the Trocaire Collection, the annual contribution from fasting for Lent, given to help the poor and needy, should take place on Divine Mercy Sunday each year.Under the auspices of the Irish Episcopal Conference, Trocaire, based at Maynooth College, coordinates this global effort each year. The process of collecting makes its way to each parish through a package with information and a box for collection included. Each family received a box this year, as last, in this parish. They were asked in the family to contribute to it each day or week, over the Lenten season, by giving what they saved in making Lenten sacrifices in the name of Jesus, who lived the mystery of the desert in fasting and prayer for forty days and forty nights. The time has now come to present this gift to the poor. Please ensure the Trocaire box is left in this weekend or up until the first Sunday of May at weekends in the churches or during the week to the parochial houses.Do not please, even with your best intentions, leave the box in the church during the week, putting it on altar rails, main altar or into sacristy, for obvious reasons. The counters would prefer that you convert the coins into notes for easy accumulation for banking in the account; please do that for us.The monies are coordinated well by the Trocaire office in Maynooth and get directly to the source of the problems, in the needy areas of the world, under their tutelage. It is a work of great mercy and compassion and it gels well with the Sunday we are celebrating in honour of Divine Mercy. This devotion promoted by St Faustina and endorsed heavily by Pope John Paul the Great and Servant of God, is now well established in the Church, as is this Sunday dedicated to it each year universally in the Church.Mercy and compassion, the special attributes of God, filter into our lives by way of response to this call.If we have compassion for our brother or sister in need and see the importance of his/her situation in relation to being our brother or sister in Christ, giving to their need is a great act of Christian mercy and love.

So our response to Trocaire is a mirror of Divine Mercy in our lives in the Church and in the world. Thank you.

Final reflection on the Seven Deadly Sins for Lent. Final one; Sloth.

Sloth.(acedia) a sadness that leads to despairing; a listlessness, disappointed and disillusioned, a struggle of the inner man.It has also been called melancholy, the mind losing the sweetness of tranquillity and is supplanted by grief resulting from agitation.A strange kind of fruitless disquiet comes with it and restlessness and distraction ; we re-order our books and change the furniture around and when we have finished, we do it again;we flick aimlessly through the T.V.channels. It is also seen as the failure to use one`s talents and gifts, failing to achieve full potential. It is a root sin of laziness and indifference. In religion it shows itself as a refusal to enjoy the goodness of God and His creation and as an apathy that discourages all religious expression., at worst being disgusted with the spiritual and divine. It has also been described as a spiritual black hole, energy falling into a sterile, unproductive space; the mind collapses in on itself and self-hatred is not far away. Listlessness, pointlessness, meaninglessness can be symptoms of sloth.People are roused out of sloth by positive thinking and creative activity.Spiritually the resolution of sloth is found in measuring ourselves according to what God is and wants and being filled with the Christian virtue of hope.
